China is one of the significant birthplaces of human civilisation, with a history spanning more than 5,000 years. While the ancient Egyptian, Babylonian and Indian civilisations were developing, the Xia, Shang and Western Zhou dynasties were flourishing in China. During the heyday of the Greek and Roman city-states in Europe, Chinese thought and culture prospered throughout the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, establishing China as one of the world’s great civilisations.
China is a unified, multiethnic country. Throughout its long history, people from diverse ethnic groups have worked together to shape a unique culture and form the Chinese nation as we know it today.
Cultural exchange between China and other nations expanded significantly through great Chinese inventions and products such as paper, gunpowder, the compass, printing technology, porcelain and silk. The essence of Chinese culture is expressed through poetry, art, music, dance and drama, which often reflect the Chinese people’s love of nature and their deep appreciation of moral values and ethics.
HLS Mandarin Centre strives to introduce this beautiful culture to the people of South Africa by hosting a variety of cultural activities, including traditional tea parties, Chinese calligraphy lessons, Chinese chess lessons and Chinese cooking classes.
