In many developed countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Australia, Mandarin Chinese is one of the most popular optional second languages offered in primary and secondary schools.
In 2015, South Africa’s Department of Basic Education officially announced a new language policy allowing schools to offer Mandarin Chinese as an optional additional language. The policy was officially implemented in January 2016.
